Work out your horse's exact age in years, months and days from their date of birth, with a countdown to the next birthday, or enter an age to see roughly what that is in human years and which life stage it falls in.
There's no exact formula. A rough comparison only:
| Horse age | Roughly, in human years |
|---|---|
| 1 | 6.5 |
| 2 | 13 |
| 3 | 18 |
| 5 | 23 |
| 10 | 35.5 |
| 15 | 48 |
| 20 | 60.5 |
| 25 | 73 |
| 30 | 85.5 |
Racing and many breed societies give every horse the same official birthday: 1 January in the northern hemisphere (the UK, Ireland, Europe and North America) and 1 August in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Pick your country and the calculator shows the official age today alongside the real age. It's a racing and breed-society convention; the real age is the one on the passport.
A commonly quoted rough scale counts a horse's first year as about 6.5 human years, two as about 13, three as about 18, then roughly 2.5 human years for every year after that. A 20-year-old horse is roughly 60 in human years.
Many vets and feed companies use "veteran" from around 15 years old, when teeth, weight, joints and coat changes need closer watching.
Thoroughbreds, and many breed and competition rules in the Northern hemisphere, count every horse as a year older on 1 January, whatever the actual foaling date.
