Horse weight calculator

No weighbridge? Two measurements with an ordinary tape give a good estimate of your horse's weight, close enough to track changes, dose wormers and plan feed. Enter the heart girth and body length in centimetres or inches and the calculator gives the weight in kilograms and pounds.

How to measure your horse

  1. Stand the horse square on level ground, head up and relaxed.
  2. Heart girth: pass a soft tape around the barrel just behind the elbow and over the highest point of the withers. Read it as the horse breathes out.
  3. Body length: measure in a straight line from the point of the shoulder to the point of the buttock.
  4. Use the same tape, the same spots and ideally the same person each time, so changes are real changes.

The formula

It was developed for adult riding horses and is less accurate for foals, heavy draught types, heavily pregnant mares and very fit or very fat horses.

Frequently asked questions

How do I work out my horse's weight without a weighbridge?

Measure the heart girth and the body length with a soft tape. Weight in kg is girth (cm) squared times length (cm) divided by 11,880; in pounds it is girth (in) squared times length (in) divided by 330.

How accurate is a weight tape estimate?

Tape estimates are usually within about 10% for an adult riding horse. They are best used to spot changes over time, measured the same way each time.
